What To Plant In Your Garden In June

What To Plant In Your Garden In June

June is the prime growing season for a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Not sure what you should be planting in your garden right now? Read on to get a few suggestions from the team at The Soil King.

  1. Beans
Beans are a great option for June plantings. They grow quickly in warm soil, and since they’re not frost-resistant, it’s a good idea to wait until the soil temperature is consistently above 50 to 60° F before planting. They grow quickly, and some varieties can provide you with a crop in 35-45 days. Take a look at the beans available in your nearest garden center – a few varieties we recommend are Midori Giant Soybeans, French Garden Beans, and green beans like Harvester Beans.

  1. Corn
Corn is the most iconic summer vegetable to grow – and it grows extremely quickly. A full harvest is easily possible within 60 days with some types of corn. Try your hand at growing a small plot of corn – once you pull off a corn cob right from the stalk, boil it, and drizzle it with butter and salt, you’ll never want to be without this summer treat.

  1. Herbs (Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Sage)
Herbs can be grown at any time of year – both indoors and outdoors. But June is a great time to plant herbs that love heat, such as oregano, basil, sage, and thyme. Most herbs repel insects and don't need much special care beyond regular watering, so they’re a very low-maintenance option if you don’t want to plant other vegetables.

  1. Melons And Watermelons
If you plant melons now, you’ll have a delicious harvest by the end of the summer – cantaloupe and watermelon usually take around 90-100 days, and a freshly-grown melon is one of the best treats you can have in the summertime.

  1. Summer Squash
Sowing summer squash like butternut squash and zucchini in June will lead to a harvest by July or August. From eating squash fresh and raw to cooking it or even canning it for later use, there are plenty of ways to make use of your harvest, too – so it’s a great option!
