How Long Can Seedling Feed on the Nutrients Supplied in Most Compost-Based Potting Soil?

Starting seedlings in the spring is a wonderful phase preceding a luscious and varied garden for the rest of the year. Preparing properly for this stage is important in achieving healthy seedlings and having strong, productive plants later, whether you are planting vegetables or ornamentals for your garden.

Let’s look into what kind of soil you need for seed-starting and share a few tips on how to achieve successful little plants.

What Soil Does Seed-Starting Need?

Seeds need constant moisture to germinate and sprout. The seed-starting potting soil should be able to retain moisture successfully but drain effectively at the same time to avoid rotting roots and fungus.

The soil mix needs to be sterile to prevent any diseases that may affect the plants when they are so vulnerable. It’s best to buy good commercial potting soil if you don’t want to sterilize and mix your own soil. Our Baby Rootz soil was designed specifically for growing your seedlings in a healthy environment.

How to Obtain Strong Seedling

Follow the instructions on the seed package to know exactly when to plant them and what conditions they require. Before the sprout appears from the ground, you will need to cover the seedling tray with plastic, foil, or a plastic dome to trap the moisture in.

Once you have the first little leaves, remove the plastic cover and give your seedling plenty of light, constant moisture, and fertilizer.

When it’s about time to move your seedlings outdoors (1-2 weeks before), you have to start the hardening process. Expose your seedlings gradually to indirect sunlight, protect them from the wind and make sure it’s not too cold for them.

It’s also time to reduce the watering frequency and slow down the plant’s growth, as they will become stronger and more fit to adapt to the new conditions outdoors or in a bigger pot.

How Long Can Seedlings Last on Compost-Based Soil?

The amount of time your seedlings can thrive in their trays depends on how nutrient the potting soil is and how effective it is at releasing those nutrients slower. You can find commercial seed-starting soils with added fertilizer, and some without.

Some products, like our Baby Big Rootz Soil, are designed to make the little plants grow strong until the moment comes to move them in a container or outside. They can thrive for up to 3 months with the right nutrients and care. Once transitioning the seedlings to their new home, you can switch to our Big Rootz soil to ensure a healthy plant as it grows.
