Can I Use Outdoor Soil for Indoor Plants?

Growing your plants can bring a lot of joy. They decorate your home and improve the quality of your indoor air. Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies because it’s relaxing and doesn’t take a lot of resources to retrieve fantastic results.

Many homeowners decide to use indoor plants, whether it’s because they don’t have a garden, the climate is harsh, or just because they want some greenery inside. Growing a thriving garden inside your home takes a bit of research to find out what kind of plants will do good in containers and the reduced light exposure.

But the soil you decide to use is just as important for your plant babies. Is outdoor soil good enough to plant your indoor plants in, or should you use something else?

Why You Should Use Indoor Soil for Your House Plants

Even if it would be very convenient to dig up some soil from your outdoor garden to put in your containers, in most cases it’s not a good idea. Outdoor soil is usually more dense, heavy, retains water more easily, and packs up in a compact mass.

When planting your seeds or seedlings in a container or a pot, it’s best to use soil that is dedicated to indoor planting. Potted plants need good drainage and an aired soil, which is obtained by using special mixes of soil and sand, or pebbles and other mulch.

Before you put the soil in your pot or container, it’s recommended to add a layer of pebbles to the bottom, so that the drain hole is not covered in soil and ensures the good circulation of water.

Using outdoor soil might lead to a list of issues that could affect your plants and even kill them. Rotting roots, drowned plants, and mold are some of the most common problems when using the wrong kind of soil for indoor plants.
